Unfortunately, summer pet emergencies can happen, even when R&R is what we want most, and we at Lincoln Hills Veterinary Hospital want you to be as prepared as possible.

Examples of Summer Pet Emergencies

A lazy summer day could turn into an urgent or emergency situation more quickly than we would like. Here are some things to look out for this season:

Heat-Related Illness or Injury

Pets should never be left alone in the car. While this is true all year, it is imperative to remember in the summer. Even minute exposure to heat and humidity can lead to dehydration and/or heatstroke. Get your pet to the vet ASAP if you notice:

Unexplained fatigue or lethargy

Disorientation or wobbling gait

Tacky, dry, or discolored gums

Excessive panting, labored breathing, and/or increased heart rate

Sunken, dull eyes

Vomiting after drinking water

Collapse

Hyperthermia

As with humans, pets can go downhill quickly if heat exhaustion or dehydration strike, so contact a veterinarian right away if you suspect these issues.

Heat can cause external injury as well, so take your daily walks in grassy areas, or at times when the sun is not so strong. Test pavement with the back of your hand; if it’s too hot for your skin, then it could burn your pet’s paws!

Parasites and Pests

Summer generally means more time outdoors, which means increased exposure to fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and parasites spread through animal waste. While gross, these don’t always present an immediate emergency. However, if your dog or cat is infected or infested for too long without treatment, issues like heartworm, Ehrlichia, and intestinal parasites can lead to serious illness. Keep up to date with wellness visits because current vaccines and parasite preventives can help you avoid trouble later.

Toxins and Poisons

While you’re out in those grassy areas, leash-walking is your best bet to keep pets away from potentially problematic plants. From the forest or front yard, to your garden or guest bedroom, you should be choosy about the plants your dogs and cats can encounter. Consider sharp leaves, thorns, bulbs, fertilizer, pesticides, and plant toxins.

Injuries

Whether your summer sports are extreme or just all in good fun, the potential for injury increases right alongside the uptick in activity. Sudden yelps, broken limbs, foxtail encounters, or abrupt limping are sure signs that your dog or cat is hurt. But there may be more subtle signs, too. Your pet may be disinterested in getting up from their bed, or they may refuse to walk up the stairs. You might see concentrated licking of a limb or joint, or you could notice that your pet lays curled up with a certain area of the body hidden. Be aware that even the most docile and friendly dog or cat may lash out or bite if you try to touch an injured area. If you suspect an injury, talk with your veterinary team before you try to touch it.

Summer Emergency Preparedness for Pets

You can’t prevent every emergency, but you can be ready to react accordingly.

Both scenarios are more serious than a general veterinary visit for routine blood work or vaccines, and they should be addressed in an appropriate manner. Luckily, we can provide urgent care for pets during our business hours. But you’ll want to know when to call a vet for a pet emergency at any time of any day.

Once you have a handle on recognizing these situations, you can prepare a physical first-aid kit. Our recommended list includes:

Gauze

Adhesive tape and nonstick bandages

Activated charcoal or Milk of Magnesia (used for absorbing poisons, but not to be used until instructed by Poison Control or your veterinarian)

Hydrogen peroxide

Syringe or eyedropper

Tweezers and bandage scissors

Extra leash and collar

Blanket (for instances of possible shock)

Pet stretcher (or a large towel)

This will help you respond with immediacy as you contact a veterinarian for more guidance.

Keep an updated list of important health information in a notes app, and in a readily-accessible drawer with items like:

Your regular veterinarian’s location and contact information

Your pet’s general medical info (age, approximate weight, underlying conditions, current medications, etc.)

The closest 24-hour pet emergency hospital (near your home or wherever you travel with your pet)

Pet Poison Helpline and/or Animal Poison Control info

A recent photo of your pet.

Fun in the sun can turn into panic in the park faster than the swish of a tail, and you won’t want to be caught completely off guard. We hope that you now feel informed and empowered to make the most out of this season by staying safe with your pets!

The majority of your focus during the summer should be on rest and relaxation.
